schwarzkopf died yesterday after battling pneumonia. >> president obama called the retired general an american original who stood tall for his country and had a love for the army that he led. answer's chuck sivertsen looks back at this military legend. >> reporter: in 1990, norman schwarzkopf was a little known u.s. army general looking ahead to retirement. then saddam hussein invaded neighboring kuwait and stormin' norman became a household name. schwarzkopf quickly turned into the face of the u.s.-led counterattack called operation desert storm to evict the iraqi invaders. >> it's impossible to say how long it's going to take. but let me put it this way, it's going to take as long as it takes for the iraqis to get out of kuwait and the united nations resolutions to be enforced. >> reporter: a six-week campaign of aerial bombardment, culminating in a ground offensive routing the iraqis in 100 hours. >> now it looks like not only their air force, but their navy is being told to get out of the war. >> reporter: norman schwarzkopf was a west point graduate who spent his whole career in the army.
